Competition for the 1936 school year piano prize of the National Institute of Music. 56 pianists (students of INM) competed, performing the 1st movement of Beethoven's Sonata No. 31, a Prelude and Fugue by Bach, and one or more pieces of their own choosing, performed from memory. September 12. Radio Nacional is inaugurated in the Joseph Gire Building (Praça Mauá), better known as "A Noite," as it was initially the headquarters of the evening newspaper of the same name. The station was the first to have coverage in practically all of Brazil. It then had the prefix PRE-8, by which it was also identified by listeners. From the 1930s until the end of the 1950s, radio had enormous "glamour" in Brazil. Being a radio artist or singer was a cherished dream for thousands of people, especially young people. Belonging to the "cast" of a major station like Rádio Nacional was enough for an artist to achieve nationwide success and gain great prominence and prestige. Radamés Gnattali was hired by Rádio Nacional in 1936 and worked there for over two decades as a pianist, conductor, and arranger, performing in various programs, such as "Quando Canta o Brasil" (When Brazil Sings).
