July 18th. L. M. Luiz Major, first prize in pianoforte at the Paris Conservatory and director of the French opera orchestra, performs Polonaise and Adagio, both of his own composition, on solo piano; as well as a Military March and a Fantasy of unidentified authorship. He also performs a Duo Concertante (of unidentified authorship) for piano and violin on motifs from Rossini's opera William Tell, with an unidentified violinist. Teatro S. Januário, Rio de Janeiro. In 1855, the Conservatory left its first location, moving to the building of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, which then took over its administration. In 1890, after the Proclamation of the Republic, the Conservatory was renovated and reopened, becoming known as the National Institute of Music. In 1937, the National Institute of Music became the National School of Music, as part of the University of Rio de Janeiro, which in 1937 was renamed the University of Brazil, and in 1965, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

Some of its piano teachers until 1890 were: Carlos Severiano Cavalier Darbilly, Arnaud Duarte de Gouvêa, and Alfredo Fertin de Vasconcelos.
