Paulo Guedes

Paulo Luis Vianna Guedes was born in Porto Alegre (RS), on November 14, 1916. In 1934, he graduated in music from the then Institute of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and, in 1939, graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the same university. He was part of the first group of doctors to begin psychoanalytic training in Porto Alegre, becoming one of the founders of the Porto Alegre Psychoanalytic Society.

In 1936, he joined the Institute of Arts as an Assistant Professor of Chamber Ensemble, later assuming the position of Full Professor. At that faculty, he also taught History of Music. In 1940, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Psychiatric Clinic at the Faculty of Medicine of UFRGS, where, in 1942, he defended his doctoral thesis, having been approved with distinction. In 1944, he competed for the position of Associate Professor of Psychiatry at that faculty and, in 1950, took over the discipline of Psychiatry.

Under his guidance, in 1957, the Postgraduate courses in Psychiatry were created. He founded the Southern Rio Grande do Sul Conferences on Dynamic Psychiatry. He published several scientific works in the areas of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis, Analytical Group Psychotherapy, Medical Psychology, and Medical Education. For ten years, he was a violinist in the Official Quartet of the Institute of Arts. Musical composition was always one of his passions. He played several instruments, especially the violin. He passed away on February 24, 1969. He left behind the following works for piano: Nocturne (published in the Musical Album commemorating the bicentennial of Porto Alegre, 1940), Children's Suite (published by the Rio Grande do Sul Music Association Editions), Four Brazilian Sketches (I.

Chorinho; II. Cantiga; III. Toada; IV. Dança); for voice: Modinha (verses by Carlos Drummond de Andrade), Trovas (verses by Ovídio Chaves), Cantiga de Amor (verses by Fernando Guedes); for orchestra: Suite for orchestra, Three pieces in a popular character for flute, guitar and string orchestra; For choir: Brinquedo de roda, Three songs for Madeleine (I. A moda da moça muda; II. Modinha; III. Menina dos óio grande, with verses by Antonio Messias and Paulo Guedes) and Praga triste (verses by Antonio Messias).
